Preston Castle, il castello più infestato d’America

Amici ci troviamo davanti ad uno degli esempi più eclatanti dell’architettura romanica rinascimentale nel paese, la scuola (la chiamo scuola ma era un riformatorio con annesso centro di recupero) , nota con il nome di Preston Castle, sembra uscita di direttamente da un film. Non sono però le sue caratteristiche scolastiche o architettoniche a rendere tanto famosa questa struttura, ma le terribili storie di fantasmi che l’hanno resa la nota come struttura più infestata della California e forse d’America…

Inaugurata nel 1894, la Preston School of Industry era inizialmente la dimora di sette minori sotto la tutela dello stato della California, trasferiti lì da San Quintino, successivamente centinaia di giovani passarono attraverso le sue porte nel corso degli anni, tra cui ricordiamo Merle Haggard, Neal Cassady, Eddie Bunker e Tony Cornero, quest’ultimo, celebre durante il Proibizionismo, in seguito costruì lo Stardust Resort & Casino di Las Vegas.

Gli attuali visitatori del castello di Preston spesso notano la somiglianza con la villa infestata della miniserie televisiva di Stephen King, Rose Red, e questo perché in parte pare ci si sia ispirati a questa struttura oltre che alla celebre villa dei Winchester, in particolare per la facciata con i mattoni rossi.

Sembra che il castello di Preston abbia una storia di fenomeni paranormali che vengono segnalati all’interno e intorno alle sue mura. Oltre alle solite storie di strani rumori, punti freddi e angoscia immotivata, si dice che il sito sia la casa dei fantasmi di diverse persone che l’hanno abitato, così come, ad esempio, la governante Anna Corbin, che è stata percossa a morte nel Castello nel 1950. Oltre a questa possibile presenza si ricordano una manciata di morti inspiegabili tra i reparti dell’istituto nel corso degli anni e, si dice, che ci sia un cimitero perduto sul terreno che contiene le tombe di 23 ex detenuti, dal momento che era adibita a carcere…
