The mysterious Sardinian amulet that eliminates evil: Su Coccu

Friends here we are talking about a strange amulet that has a long tradition in Sardinia, I’m talking about “Su Coccu”. We talked about the magic in Sardinian land and the various beliefs related to the evil eye that find their nemesis in the eye medicine. There are various practices that serve to ward off the evil eye all based on a blind belief, a requirement sine qua non.

This could lead us to believe that more than magic we are talking about superstitions, but the thing is more complex, now I do not want to give more explanations about it, so let’s talk about this strange amulet.

Su Coccu is a black sphere, about 6/8 mm in diameter, typically made of obsidian or in onyx, of very fine workmanship, which is set in a silver pendant and often combined with a green bracelet (bracelet that alone it is a good luck always in the same field) and given to the unborn as a sign of good luck. Legend has it that this sphere succeeds in absorbing evil and that when it is no longer able to incorporate it again, it physically detaches itself from its pendant.

Personally I have had similar objects and have never detached myself because of the care with which I have treated the objects that are supported by rather thin silver rings. Regardless of its real effectiveness, I must admit that it is a very nice object and that receiving it as a gift is always interpreted as a sign of real affection, so it is welcome.

Have you ever had one?
