Cerchiamo di aggiungere qualche particolare alla leggenda per capirci un po’ di più. La foto fu scattata da un certo Capitano Hubert Provand nel 1936 durane una visita alla pittoresca villa di campagna Raynham Hall sita nella contea di Norfolk in Inghilterra. Dorothy fu la seconda moglie di Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscounte di Townshend, e non godeva di una buona reputazione tanto da essere accusata di essere l’amante di un altro personaggio in vista del tempo, Philip Wharton, primo duca di Wharton… Insomma intrecci amorosi e pettegolezzi esattamente come ai nostri tempi.
Di questo spirito che è passato alla storia come “Brown Lady” sappiamo poco altro, e probabilmente si tratta di uno dei primi falsi della storia del paranormale benché davvero suggestivo. Al tempo le fotocamere erano degli attrezzi piuttosto complicati e presupponevano dei tempi di posa abbastanza lunghi, in questo modo una persona che fosse passata velocemente in quella scala rallentando in quel punto avrebbe potuto lasciare una traccia simile a quella che vediamo nella storica foto. Di questo fantasma si sente parlare dalla metà del 1800 e tanti sostengono di avere avuto esperienze paranormali all’interno della nota villa, eppure il tutto ha il chiaro sapore di una mistificazione a scopo turistico.
E’ pur vero che è solo una mia ipotesi e che forse si tratta veramente di qualcosa di paranormale, sfortunatamente rimarrà sempre il dubbio…
A historical photo of an alleged ghost: Brown Lady
Friends are very sure that all of you have seen this picture at least once looking for ghost images on the net … It is one of the most famous images available and according to the legend would be the spirit of the noblewoman Dorothy Walpole.
We try to add some details to the legend to understand a little more. The photo was taken by a certain Captain Hubert Provand in 1936 during a visit to the picturesque Raynham Hall country villa located in Norfolk county in England. Dorothy was the second wife of Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscounte Townshend, and did not enjoy a good reputation so much to be accused of being the lover of another character in view of the time, Philip Wharton, first duke of Wharton … In short amorous weaves and gossip exactly as in our times.
We know very little about this spirit that has gone down in history as “Brown Lady”, and probably it is one of the first fakes in the history of the paranormal, although very suggestive. At the time the cameras were rather complicated tools and they assumed quite long shutter speeds, in this way a person who had quickly passed in that scale slowing down at that point could leave a trace similar to the one we see in the historical photo. We hear about this ghost from the mid-1800s and many claim to have had paranormal experiences in the well-known villa, and yet the whole thing has the clear taste of a mystification for tourism.
It is true that it is only my hypothesis and that perhaps it is really something of a paranormal, unfortunately the doubt will always remain …
