Il mistero della SS Baychimo, la nave fantasma che naviga da sola

Questa nave è (o forse era) un battello a vapore di 1300 tonnellate varato nel 1914 in Svezia e adibito al trasporto di merci e truppe. Dal 1914 al 1931 effettuò diverse attraversate verso il Canada per poi rimanere incastrata tra i ghiacci…

L’equipaggio riuscì a mettersi in salvo ma non poté far nulla per la nave che fu abbandonata, ed ecco che iniziarono i fatti strani. La nave poco dopo si liberò dai ghiacci ed iniziò a navigare alla deriva venendo intercettata diverse volte da altri naviganti, ma non sembrava essere senza controllo.

Fin qui potrebbe trattarsi di coincidenze molto fortunate eppure dopo questi avvistamenti ne furono fatti altri per un periodo complessivo di 38 anni, tanto che la nave si guadagnò il titolo di Nave fantasma e le leggende su di lei iniziarono a diffondersi, tanto che i marinai della zona raccontavano che fosse controllata da spiriti erranti che ne avevano fatto la propria dimora…

Nella tradizione marinara spesso le leggende nascono in questo modo, eppure non possiamo non ammettere che una nave che viaggi alla deriva per 38 anni senza alcun incidente è un fatto piuttosto strano. Oggi della SS Baychino non si sa più nulla e forse ormai riposa sul fondo del gelido mare, o forse sta ancora solcando i mari con a bordo il suo spettrale equipaggio, chi può dirlo…
