L’entità più rappresentata e temuta: Azrael, l’angelo della morte (עזראל‎ – عزرائیل)

Amici è inutile dire che questo essere della mitologia religiosa è rappresentato e presente in ogni cultura sempre quasi con le stesse sembianze. Utile e terrificane rappresenta, secondo la tradizione delle varie religioni, l’ultima visione di un mortale.

Azrael (in arabo: عزرائیل ed in ebraico: עזראל‎ ‎), significa letteralmente “colui che Dio aiuta”, nella cultura europea siamo soliti riferirci a lui come “angelo della morte” o semplicemente “Morte” e curiosamente anche nel Corano gli viene attribuito un nome differente, ossia Malak al-mawt che significa proprio “Angelo della morte” dal momento che non compare mai scritto come Azrael.

Per quanto esistano delle piccole differenze nella descrizione Islamica e Cristiana di questo essere, entrambe lo rappresentano come un Arcangelo, braccio destro di Dio stesso con il gravoso compito di portare la morte agli uomini. Nel Corano è scritto:

“Vi farà morire l’Angelo della Morte, a voi preposto, poi al vostro Signore sarete ricondotti”

Quindi la visione è identica a quella comune e religiosa, ma non si limita a questo… Azrael non solo era uno dei più fidati angeli di Dio, ma era anche il più astuto e senza scrupoli, si narra nel Corano che Dio avesse comandato ai sui fidati Michele, Gabriele, Uriel e Izrāʿīl (Azrael ), di prelevare sette manciate di terra sacra dalla base dell’albero della vita nel Giardino dell’Eden, (Albero della vita che ha un significato molto profondo per i fedeli Musulmani) mentre Michele, Uriel e Gabriele stabilivano le giuste quantità da prelevare, che avrebbero portato uno di loro ad avere una sola manciata invece di due, Azrael, approfittando della distrazione dei tre prelevò tutte le sette manciate e le portò a Dio.

Personaggio quindi furbo ed opportunista, quale miglior compito per lui se non portar la morte tra gli umani?

La sua rappresentazione è pressoché identica in ogni cultura, tunica nera e falce in mano, da cui deriva anche l’appellativo di “triste mietitrice”, corpo scheletrico in alcuni casi oppure vuoto e buio sotto il cappuccio… Chissà, forse un giorno lo incontreremo davvero, oppure scopriremo che è solo una leggenda, anche se a quel punto avrà davvero senso saperlo?

 

The most represented and feared entity: Azrael, the angel of death

Friends it is useless to say that this being of religious mythology is represented and present in every culture almost always with the same appearance. Useful and terrifying, according to the tradition of the various religions, it represents the last vision of a mortal.

Azrael (in Arabic: عزرائیل and in Hebrew: עזראל), literally means “the one who helps God”, in European culture we usually refer to him as “angel of death” or simply “Death” and curiously also in the Koran he is given a different name. Malak al-mawt which really means “Angel of death” since it never appears written as Azrael.

Although there are small differences in the Islamic and Christian description of this being, both represent it as an Archangel, right arm of God himself with the heavy task of bringing death to men. In the Koran it is written:

“You will die the Angel of Death, to you, then you will be traced back to your Lord”

So the vision is identical to the common and religious, but not limited to this … Azrael was not only one of God’s most trusted angels, but also the most astute and unscrupulous, it is said in the Qur’an that God had commanded to the trusted Michael, Gabriel, Uriel and Izrā’īl, to withdraw seven handfuls of sacred earth from the base of the tree of life in the Garden of Eden, (Tree of life which has a very deep meaning for the Muslim faithful) while Michele, Uriel and Gabriel set the right quantities to take, which would lead one of them to have only one handful instead of two, Azrael, taking advantage of the distraction of the three withdrew all the seven handfuls and brought them to God.

So clever and opportunistic, what better task for him if he does not bring death to humans?

Its representation is almost identical in every culture, black tunic and sickle in hand, from which derives also the name of “sad reaper”, skeletal body in some cases or empty and dark under the hood … Who knows, maybe one day will we really meet him, or will we find out that it is only a legend, even if at that point it will really make sense to know it?
