La leggenda della mano fantasma dell’impiccato

Amici questa che vi racconto è una storia da brividi sulla triste fine di un uomo che fu giustiziato ingiustamente (storia vera) e di una strana mano fantasma (questa un po’ meno attendibile)…

I fatti in questione risalgono al 1877 ed il protagonista è un certo Jim Thorpe, un minatore della Pennsylvania che fu accusato di complottare contro i baroni del carbone insieme ad una certa Molly Maguires, una storia piuttosto comune al tempo dal momento che i minatori erano sfruttati quasi come schiavi. In seguito a quest’accusa l’uomo fu condannato a morte per impiccagione ed a niente servì la sua difesa disperata.

Jim fu rinchiuso in una cella in attesa dell’esecuzione e leggenda vuole che il giorno stabilito pose la sua mano sul pavimento sporco urlando la sua innocenza, dopo  di che appose la sua mano sporca sulla parete della cella lasciando il segno e urlando la frase: “Questa è l’impronta della mano di un uomo che muore da innocente”.

Dopo l’esecuzione la cella fu ripulita compresa l’impronta sulla parete, ma ecco che poco dopo la mano ricomparve… Le pareti furono ridipinte ma poco dopo la mano veniva fuori nuovamente.

Ora a distanza di più di cento anni questo segno indelebile continua ad esistere e niente è stato capace di cancellarlo.

Ora è chiaro che oggi nessuno avrebbe interesse a cancellare un simile ricordo del passato ma dalle cronache risulta che il tentativo sia stato fatto nel ventennio successivo all’impiccagione senza ottenere alcun risultato. Senza dubbio solo una leggenda, ma ci fa riflettere sulle tristi condizioni dei lavoratori di quel periodo.

Friends this I tell you is a creepy story about the sad end of a man who was unjustly executed.

The facts in question date back to 1877 and the protagonist is a certain Jim Thorpe, a miner from Pennsylvania who was accused of plotting against the coal barons along with a certain Molly Maguires, a rather common story at the time since the miners were exploited almost like slaves. Following this accusation, the man was sentenced to death by hanging and to no avail his desperate defense.

Jim was locked up in a cell waiting for execution and legend has it that on the appointed day he laid his hand on the dirty floor screaming his innocence, after which he put his dirty hand on the cell wall leaving the sign and shouting the phrase: “This is the imprint of the hand of a man who dies innocent”.

After the execution the cell was cleaned including the imprint on the wall, but here soon after the hand reappeared … The walls were repainted but soon after the hand came out again.

Now, after more than a hundred years, this indelible sign continues to exist and nothing has been able to erase it.

Now it is clear that today nobody would have an interest in erasing such a memory of the past but from the news it appears that the attempt was made in the twenty years following the hanging without obtaining any result. Perhaps it will only be a legend, but it makes us reflect on the sad conditions of the workers of that period.
