The book of the Dead, the most sacred text of the ancient Egyptians

Friends today I want to talk to you about a sacred text that I adore, the book of the Dead. This ancient sacred text is certainly the most important funerary text of the Egyptian tradition, used starting from 1500 BC about until the first century after Christ, thus corresponding to the period of the New Kingdom. It is in effect a magical text that collects a whole series of formulas and rites useful to the deceased in his journey to the underworld to reach the world of the dead, called by the ancient Egyptians “Duat”.

Thanks to the precepts contained in the sacred text, the deceased would have been able to avoid the various dangers that would have arisen before them from the deities in charge of the final judgment, such as the famous weight of the heart. Yes, I said well, for the Egyptians it was the heart that was weighed as a container of good and bad feelings, a belief that has come down to us almost completely untouched by the fact that we still tend to define a person without feelings of piety, without heart…

This beautiful text is part of a series of other books of equal importance as the oldest texts of the Pyramids originating in the Old Kingdom, then between 2686 BC. and 2134 BC, and the texts of the Sarcophagi dated Middle Kingdom between 2055 BC and 1790 BC, and although it seems unimportant to quote these much older texts it must be said that much of the Book of the Dead comes from them. Often, part of this book was inserted by papyri inside the sarcophagi so that the deceased could have a copy easily reachable at the beginning of his journey, but also the walls of the burial chambers were decorated with these formulas both for a purely aesthetic fact and to ensure easy reading …

The curious fact of this book is that there are several versions since they were clearly created manually and thanks to the inspiration of the priests, so we have a great variety that ranges in formulas and very varied graphics. The pharaohs were really convinced that this text could save their soul and help them to achieve the status of Divinity and frankly I hope that this has given comfort both to them and to those less important in the social class hoped in life after death, life that could continue on to the Ka

The Ka is the essence of self, a sort of astral duplication of one’s being, today we would say soul or at least that which is closest to it.
