Antica leggenda Sarda: Sa Stria

Amici oggi ho deciso di parlarvi di una leggenda sarda davvero molto antica, ossia Sa Stria.

Sembra che le origini del mito risalgano ai tempi dell’impero Romano, e da allora fino ad oggi si continua ad avere un occhio sospettoso verso questo animale. Si perché non vi ho detto che di un animale si tratta e più precisamente il Barbagianni.

Secondo la tradizione questo rapace notturno sarebbe capace di fiutare l’odore dei bambini appena nati ed andare a cacciarli per succhiare il loro sangue lasciandoli esanimi. Probabilmente in principio si trattò di un tentativo di spiegazione delle morti improvvise dei nuovi nati, spiegazione che si è poi trasformata in certezza negli anni per giungere fino ai nostri giorni.

Esistono dei modi per esorcizzare il potere della Stria e renderla innocua ed uno in particolare consiste nel bruciare delle penne di barbagianni fino ad ottenere la cenere che va poi mischiata in piccolissime quantità ad acqua e bevuta come antidoto…

Ma qui veniamo al macabro; perché l’antidoto abbia effetto si dovrebbe sacrificare un neonato, un qualcosa che fa accapponare la pelle al solo pensiero. Il tutto ora ha assunto le note della magia nera ed il motivo è presto chiaro… Sa Stria in effetti non sarebbe proprio un barbagianni comune, ma una strega che ha assunto le sue sembianze, insomma uno spirito maligno con sembianze umane ed animali e dal momento che questo essere aveva anche capacità curative spesso si optava per l’omertà facendo finta di non aver visto nulla…

Friends today I decided to tell you about a very ancient Sardinian legend, namely Sa Stria.

It seems that the origins of the myth date back to the times of the Roman Empire, and from then until today we continue to have a suspicious eye towards this animal. Yes, because I have not told you that it is about an animal and more precisely the Barbary.

According to tradition this nocturnal bird of prey would be able to smell the smell of newborn babies and go to hunt them to suck their blood leaving them exhausted. Probably at the beginning it was an attempt to explain the sudden deaths of newborns, an explanation that later turned into certainty over the years to come up to our days.

There are ways to exorcise the power of the Stria and make it harmless and one in particular consists of burning pennies until the ash is then mixed in very small quantities with water and drunk as an antidote …

But here we come to the macabre; for the antidote to take effect, a newborn should be sacrificed, something that makes the skin crawl at the thought. Everything has now taken on the notes of black magic and the reason is soon clear … Sa Stria in fact it would not be a common barn owl, but a witch who took on her appearance, in short, an evil spirit with human and animal features and since this being also had healing abilities often opted for the omertà pretending not to have seen anything …
